"Twitch"

Twitch

It pains me
to think of you
trapped in that prison,

a penitentiary
of your own making,
walls three feet thick,

barriers
twelve feet high.
I see glimpses of the person

you once were,
only visible for
a moment at daybreak,

and then
again at dusk
for no more than a flicker.

The rest
of the time you
remain perfectly hidden,

camouflaged
between the audacious ferns
and the bold California palms.

No sign is given,
no misery revealed,
but for the tell-tale twitch,

observed
only by me, forever
situated just below your right eye.

First Publication of the New Year

First publication of the New Year. Miller's Pond Poetry Magazine has published two of my poems: "Rise" and "Moment."

Who says nothing good ever happens on a Monday?   ;)

Today was a busy writing day that encompassed a bit of everything. I wrote three new poems, sent off five new submissions, and also received another rejection letter as well as a notification that a journal I submitted to in the Fall has ceased publication.

The Rejection Letter came from Contrary Magazine. Highly competitive. I never feel badly about rejections. I understand it's a numbers game. (For anyone who's counting, that makes my fourth rejection letter so far for the year.) I know how difficult it is to break into certain magazines. It doesn't mean I won't keep trying though with the ones that I really love and admire. I've got time. I'm not going anywhere.

And the 'Ceasing Publication' email came from Long Story Short Magazine. I'm disappointed that I didn't have the opportunity to publish with this journal while they were still in operation. I've really enjoyed reading some of the pieces on their site this past year. But these things happen. Folks move on to bigger and better things. I wish them well.

And now I believe I will send out one more submission for the day, just for good measure.

Acceptance Letter from Miller's Pond Poetry Magazine

I received an Acceptance Letter Email today from Julie Damerell, editor of Miller’s Pond Poetry Magazine. Two of my poems, “Rise” and “Moment” are scheduled to be published in the upcoming Winter 2015 Issue.

I couldn’t be more pleased with this final acceptance for 2014. It rounds out my year quite nicely. Bookends, so to speak.

Miller’s Pond Winter 2014 started off my year back on January 4, 2014 with my poem, “Fragility,” and now I’m finishing the year with another acceptance with Miller’s Pond. I love the balance and symmetry in that.

In respect to online journals, this acceptance letter brings my grand total to 37 online publications in the past year. I have to say, I am really, really happy with that number.   J

"Fragility"

Fragility

How anything
is true
is so very fragile…
a moment of belief
dangling over
a pool of uncertainty,
aided by
one careless qualm,
and the true
becomes
the fallen,
lost and drowning
beneath
the polished black
surface of doubt
and suspicion.
